Why managers should coach instead of solving every problem

The fastest answer is usually the manager's own. That is exactly why teams stop thinking — and why the manager ends up firefighting.
The cost of having the answer
Experienced automotive managers are fast. They have seen the situation before and can resolve it in a minute. Every time they do, the team learns that thinking is optional.
What changes when a manager coaches
- →The team member owns the solution and therefore owns the follow-through.
- →The manager sees how the person reasons, which makes development targeted.
- →Capability compounds instead of concentrating in one person.
A simple structure
Ask what the person has already considered. Ask what they would do if the decision were theirs. Agree the action and the review point. Give the answer only when safety, compliance or customer risk requires it.
Making it stick
Coaching is a habit, not a workshop. Managers need practice with real situations, feedback on real conversations, and a routine that makes the habit unavoidable.
